The Scholarly Vocation and the Baptist Academy PDF Free

The Scholarly Vocation and the Baptist Academy PDF
By:Roger A. Ward,David P. Gushee
Published on 2008 by Mercer University Press

This title offers a look at how Baptists have formed and sustained scholarly life in America. ||The Scholarly Vocation and the Baptist Academy: Essays on the Future of Baptist Higher Education|| is the product of a group of Baptist scholars interested in critically examining the history, challenges, and possibilities of a scholarly life in the Baptist Academy. The underwriting project is assessing the fruitfulness of a notion like the 'Baptist Academy' for their self-understanding and institutional identity. Authors include Thomas Kidd, Adam English, Stephen Chapman, Chad Eggleston, Doug Henry, Barry Harvey, Elizabeth Newman, Roger Ward, Scott Moore, David Gushee, and Paul Fiddes. Baptists and the intellectual establishment have often been at odds, as Paul Fiddes notes in his examination of Matthew Arnold's ||Culture and Anarchy||, which criticizes non-conformists as dismissive of high culture, jealous of an established religion, and advocating a morality of 'doing your own thing'. The voices of the young scholars in the Baptist Academy challenge the prevailing metaphors of the academy in their respective disciplines with a variety of arguments and observations that illuminate the continuing vitality of communities of learning and communities of scholars called into a covenantal understanding of themselves and the world.

Professional Uncertainty, Knowledge and Relationship in the Classroom PDF Free

Professional Uncertainty, Knowledge and Relationship in the Classroom PDF
By:Joseph Mintz
Published on 2014-06-27 by Routledge

The extent to which teachers should make use of theoretical and expert knowledge as opposed to tacit experiential knowledge, and how these might be combined, is a perennial issue in discussions on pedagogy. This book addresses these debates through a creative development of the concept of productive uncertainty. Using case studies focusing on teachers working with children with autism, a particularly fertile crucible for considering uncertainty, the book explores how the radical 20th century psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion's epistemological approach to uncertainty can be used to re-frame Donald Schön's concept of reflection in action, offering a new perspective on the practice of teachers and other caring professionals. Several areas of potential uncertainty are identified, including uncertainty relating to areas of practice including diagnosis, the relationship between expert knowledge and practice, the implications of autism for autonomy and agency, and uncertainties in relation to the understanding of and use of new technologies. A strong argument is made, based on both theoretical and empirical grounds, that in juggling between theoretical and tacit knowledge in the classroom there is more to be gained by staying with the struggle with uncertainty than by fleeing from it too early, into the promise of expert solutions. Consideration is also given to the relative importance of specific theoretical training for teachers, both in general and in relation to working with children with special educational needs, in the context of international and UK policy developments in this area. This book will be of key value to researchers and postgraduates in the fields of education studies, teacher thinking and research, psychoanalytically informed psychosocial studies, as well as to practitioners working in special educational needs/autism education.

Anarchist Pedagogies PDF
By:Robert H. Haworth
Published on 2012-07-01 by PM Press

Important and challenging issues in the area of anarchism and education are presented in this history of egalitarian and free-school practices. From Francisco Ferrer’s modern schools in Spain and the Work People’s College in the United States, to contemporary actions in developing “free skools” in the United Kingdom and Canada, the contributors illustrate the importance of developing complex connections between educational theories and collective actions. Major themes in the volume include learning from historical anarchist experiments in education, ways that contemporary anarchists create dynamic and situated learning spaces, and critical reflections on theoretical frameworks and educational practices. Many trailblazing thinkers and practitioners contributed to this volume, such as Jeffery Shantz, John Jordon, Abraham de Leon, Richard Kahn, Matthew Weinstein, and Alex Khasnabish. This thoughtful and provocative collection proves that egalitarian education is possible at all ages and levels.

Developing Helping Skills: A Step by Step Approach to Competency PDF
By:Valerie Nash Chang,Sheryn T. Scott,Carol L. Decker
Published on 2012-02-17 by Cengage Learning

Chang, Scott, and Decker's multilayered teaching and learning system presents a creative blend of learning methods and clear presentation of topics to help students think like practitioners and apply foundational skills to real-world practice. Students first read about professional practice and the skills required to work effectively with clients. Students then think and write about the ideas and concepts presented in the text by completing homework exercises following each new concept. Next, students watch and discuss the accompanying DVD (available for packaging with the text), which demonstrates how to use the skills covered in the text with an individual, family, or group. Furthermore, the text's modified case-based method introduces a continuing case, one section at a time, throughout the chapters, which helps students learn how to think like professionals. Finally, exercises with specific directions for role-playing the client, practitioner, and peer supervisor, followed by a simple evaluation tool completed by the peer supervisor and practitioner, promote practice and evaluation. New Perspectives in Philosophy of Education PDF Free

New Perspectives in Philosophy of Education PDF
By:David Lewin,Alexandre Guilherme,Morgan White
Published on 2014-10-23 by Bloomsbury Publishing

New Perspectives in Philosophy of Education seeks to build a bridge between philosophical reflection and socio-political action by developing a range of critical discussions in the areas of ethics, politics and religion. This volume brings together established authorities and a new generation of scholars to ask whether philosophy of education can contribute to political and social discourse, or whether it is destined to remain the marginal gadfly of mainstream ideology. The philosophy of education stands in danger of becoming a neglected field at precisely the moment we need to be able to reflect upon the increasingly apparent costs of the technocratic attitude to education. While many of the educational policy discussions of recent years seem far-reaching and radical, critical debate surrounding these initiatives remain largely at a populist level. New Perspectives in Philosophy of Education provides contemporary responses to philosophical issues that bear upon educational studies, policies and practices, contributing to the debate on the role of philosophy of education in an increasingly fractured intellectual milieu.

Child Development: A Thematic Approach PDF Free

Child Development: A Thematic Approach PDF
By:Danuta Bukatko,Marvin W. Daehler
Published on 2012-12-20 by Cengage Learning

Bukatko/Daehler's CHILD DEVELOPMENT: A THEMATIC APPROACH provides a comprehensive, topically organized, up-to-date picture of development from conception to adolescence. Most important, it draws students' attention to the themes that replay themselves throughout the course of development, fundamental issues that resurface continually and that provide coherence to sometimes seemingly disparate research. The themes can serve as frameworks to help students further understand and remember the multitude of facts about child development. Bukatko/Daehler's sixth edition text draws on five themes, Nature and Nurture, Sociocultural Influence, Continuity/Discontinuity, Interaction among Domains, and Risk/Resilience. By drawing on these themes, the authors hope to stimulate readers to think about the process of development, or why it proceeds as it does. Through new For Your Review and Reflection sections, the authors also hope students will engage with the text and become more adept critical thinkers, who are more likely to appreciate the ramifications of theory and research for applied issues such as parenting practices, education, and social policy for children, which are ultimately concerns for us all. Education Nouvelle Et Sciences de L'éducation PDF
By:Rita Hofstetter,Bernard Scheuwly
Published on 2006-01-01 by Peter Lang

This book is about the tumultuous and even passionate relationship between New Education and Educational Sciences, which are regarded as an inseparable -couple-, intrinsically linked and surprisingly fruitful. Yet they remain irreconcilable and are mutually contradictory in a number of their elements and characteristics. Do Educational Sciences offer a scientific base or ideological support for New Education? Do the numerous new educational initiatives and reforms provide a -laboratory- for Educational Sciences or alternatives to the new scientific paradigms? Is this at the risk of their merging? And what is the price of these tensions? Specialists in the history of Educational Sciences and New Education from various geographical, cultural and disciplinary horizons explore the complex links between this powerful reforming movement and the nascent disciplinary field that emerged during the first half of the 20th century.

Published on 2012-04-13 by Cengage Learning

Dr. Stephen Reed's Ninth Edition of COGNITION: THEORY AND APPLICATIONS focuses on the theories that underlie cognitive phenomena as well as empirical data that establishes a traditional, information processing approach to cognitive psychology. This structure allows undergraduates to discover the direct relevance of cognitive psychology to many of their daily activities. The text incorporates unparalleled scholarship in a distinctive clear voice that allows for the emphasis of both contemporary and classical research through real-life examples and experiments. Revised and updated throughout to maintain a high degree of currency and accuracy, content reflects the ever-evolving field and is made relevant to students' lives through the inclusion of popular articles from well-known magazines and newspapers. As a result of its adherence to three criteria--the material must make an important contribution to cognitive psychology, be accessible, and be both understandable and interesting--the text is an invaluable tool in learning cognitive psychology.
