Post Traumatic Success: Positive Psychology & Solution-Focused Strategies to Help Clients Survive & Thrive PDF Free

Post Traumatic Success: Positive Psychology & Solution-Focused Strategies to Help Clients Survive & Thrive PDF
By:Fredrike Bannink
Published on 2014-10-13 by W. W. Norton & Company

Resiliency-focused approaches to managing trauma. This is a book to help clients to transform what happened to them to make them better instead of bitter. The first book on trauma to combine the theory and practice of positive psychology and solution-focused brief therapy with traditional approaches, this book veers away from a focus on pathology (what is wrong with clients and how to repair the worst) to a focus on what is right with them (and how to create the best)—that is, from post traumatic stress to post traumatic success. The three R’s of post traumatic success are: Recovery, Resilience and enRichment (post traumatic growth) - concepts depicted by the bamboo plant on the book’s cover. Trauma professionals will learn what it takes to help more survivors benefit more substantively from therapy and how to support their clients in developing longer-term resilience. By practicing the skills in this book, they can increase their clients’ self-efficacy and self-esteem, and make psychotherapy shorter in time, more cost effective and more lighthearted for their clients and themselves. Written for all professionals and students working with trauma survivors (both adults and children) and their families and friends, it equips readers with practical direction for adopting a more positive approach and expanding their range of available techniques. Over a hundred exercises, thirty-three cases, and forty stories are presented to illustrate and help incorporate this new approach into practice. It’s about time to turn the tide on treating trauma by shifting the focus from reducing distress and merely surviving to building success and positively thriving.

Interpersonal Relationships PDF
By:Diana Jackson-Dwyer
Published on 2013-10-15 by Routledge

With a more specific focus than the all-encompassing textbook, each title in the Foundations of Psychology series enables students who are new to psychology to get to grips with a key area of psychological research, while also developing an understanding of basic concepts, debates, and research methodologies. In this book Diana Jackson-Dwyer presents an introductory survey of classic and recent research on relationships and the theories that underpin them. The book starts with a brief overview of the place of relationships within the history of psychology and of their evolutionary roots: our need to belong, to attach and to affiliate. After a look at methodology, it considers different types of relationships: kinship, friendship, loving and mating. Theories are advanced to explain the formation, maintenance and breakdown of relationships. The book draws on a wide array of contemporary research, and covers issues ranging from rising divorce rates to cultural variations in mating patterns, the issue of gay marriage, and the effect of the internet on relationships. Each chapter contains numerous pedagogical features which will help students to engage with the material: Chapter-specific learning objectives and summaries of key points Study boxes presenting reflective exercises, research questions, and issues for discussion Glossaries and suggestions for further reading Assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, Interpersonal Relationships provides an accessible and up-to-date overview of this vibrant area of psychology. The book will be ideal reading for students who are new to higher-level study - whether at school, college or university, and will also be useful for first-year undergraduate students taking introductory courses in psychology.

Knowledge Structures in Close Relationships PDF
By:Garth J. O. Fletcher,Julie Fitness
Published on 1996 by Psychology Press

Thirty-three of the top scholars in this fast moving domain present a picture of work at the cusp in social psychology -- work that deals with cognition and affect in close relationships. The present volume contains a wealth of research findings and influential theoretical accounts that spring as much from indigenous work in the close relationship field as from purebred social cognition. The chapters introduce theories and research programs concerned with the role of individual and couple differences in close relationship knowledge structures. They deal with the role of emotion and affect in close relationships. And they discuss the function of cognition and knowledge structures in relation to the developmental course of close relationships. Each section is accompanied by a critical review written by an expert in the field. This volume is a must for any close relationship scholar interested in the latest research and theorizing about close relationships that adopt a social psychological perspective. It will also be of interest to scholars and students working in clinical psychology, social cognition, communication, individual differences, and family studies.

By:Kathleen D. Vohs,Eli J. Finkel
Published on 2006-03-16 by Guilford Press

This volume brings together leading investigators who integrate two distinct research domains in social psychology--people's internal worlds and their close relationships. Contributors present compelling findings on the bidirectional interplay between internal processes, such as self-esteem and self-regulation, and relationship processes, such as how positively partners view each other, whether they are dependent on each other, and the level of excitement in the relationship. Methodological challenges inherent in studying these complex issues are described in depth, as are implications for understanding broader aspects of psychological functioning and well-being.

Iconic couples’ therapist and bestselling author of Mating in Captivity Esther Perel returns with a provocative look at relationships through the lens of infidelity. An affair: it can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet, this extremely common human experience is so poorly understood. What are we to make of this time-honored taboo—universally forbidden yet universally practiced? Why do people cheat—even those in happy marriages? Why does an affair hurt so much? When we say infidelity, what exactly do we mean? Do our romantic expectations of marriage set us up for betrayal? Is there such a thing as an affair-proof marriage? Is it possible to love more than one person at once? Can an affair ever help a marriage? Perel weaves real-life case stories with incisive psychological and cultural analysis in this fast-paced and compelling book. For the past ten years, Perel has traveled the globe and worked with hundreds of couples who have grappled with infidelity. Betrayal hurts, she writes, but it can be healed. An affair can even be the doorway to a new marriage—with the same person. With the right approach, couples can grow and learn from these tumultuous experiences, together or apart. Affairs, she argues, have a lot to teach us about modern relationships—what we expect, what we think we want, and what we feel entitled to. They offer a unique window into our personal and cultural attitudes about love, lust, and commitment. Through examining illicit love from multiple angles, Perel invites readers into an honest, enlightened, and entertaining exploration of modern marriage in its many variations. Fiercely intelligent, The State of Affairs provides a daring framework for understanding the intricacies of love and desire. As Perel observes, “Love is messy; infidelity more so. How to Measure a Relationship PDF Free

How to Measure a Relationship PDF
By:Barbara Stroud
Published on 2012-12-24 by Createspace Independent Pub

How to Measure a Relationship is the must have workbook for any service provider designing relationship-based goals and interventions for children birth to five years old. This text strategically walks the reader through the decision making steps to build developmentally focused goals and relationship-based interventions. Helpful charts and a useful decision tree lead to a user friendly high quality clinical tool for any level of provider. Dr. Stroud introduces the concept of the |Causal Rubric|, which is a set of critical questions that informs clinicians how to navigate through a myriad of issues facing infants, toddlers, and their families, such as relationship dynamics, trauma, and developmental issues specific to the young child. “I have been waiting for a book like this since beginning graduate school! It clearly outlines and describes attachment-based concepts and goals for infants and preschool children. As a mental health clinician working with young children this book has helped me conceptualize and treatment plan quickly and with increased confidence. This book offers an excellent background for healthy development that all birth-to-five treatment providers can benefit from. I highly recommend this book to anyone working with infants and young children.”Mental health services for infants and toddlers in the public sector funded by MediCaid funds is a relatively new phenomenon. Drawing down MediCaid funds for dyadic therapy makes services available to previously underutilized groups of children ages 0-5, particularly children in child welfare. Many publicly operated county mental health systems are seeking to train a strong workforce of mental health clinicians well prepared to provide services for children 0-5; furthermore, the number of children served by public mental health systems has grown by leaps and bounds. Dr. Stroud's book provides practical solutions to the challenges faced by clinicians new to the field of infant and early childhood mental health and working in the public sector .

By:Bronagh Starrs
Published on 2018-11-26 by Routledge

Counsellors and psychotherapists are faced with ever-increasing complexity in their work with adolescents. In this book, Bronagh Starrs offers an understanding of developmental and therapeutic process from a relational-phenomenological Gestalt perspective. Starrs shows how the adolescent’s presenting symptom issues are statements of compromised lifespace integrity and demonstrates therapeutic sensibility to the adolescent’s first-person experience. Throughout the book, the clinician is offered extensive relational and creative strategies to support integrity repair for the adolescent. The developmental impact of various lifespace contexts are discussed, including parental separation, complex family configuration, grief, adoption, and emerging sexual orientation and gender experience. Therapeutic responses to common creative adjustments are explored including anxiety, school refusal, depression, self-harm, suicide, eating disorders, alcohol and drug use, and sexual trauma. Adolescent Psychotherapy: A Radical Relational Approach will help counsellors and psychotherapists to develop deeper levels of competency in their work as adolescent psychotherapists, as they navigate the complex and fascinating experience of therapy with teenagers. Making Sense Together PDF

Peter Buirski and Pamela Haglund argue that intersubjectivity is founded on two assumptions: First, our moment-by-moment experience of ourselves and the world emerges within a dynamic, fluid context of others; and, second, that we can never observe things as they exist in isolation.

Close Relationship Loss PDF

Published on 2012-12-06 by Springer Science & Business Media

Social scientists from various disciplines have been increasingly concerned with the nature, structure, and function of close relationships. Although most of the early work on the topic of close relationships drew attention to the development of close relationships, since the mid-1970s researchers have begun to investigate the many different aspects connected to the loss of close relationships. Despite the change to a more comprehensive conceptual framework, close relationship research is often criticized for being atheoretical; the research is criticized for being purely descriptive in nature and thus lacking a more theoretical framework. Contrary to this belief, I wish to argue that researchers in the area of close relationship loss employ several critical and prominent theoretical perspectives to describe, explain, and understand the endings of relationships-thus, the fruition of this book. The major aim of this edited book is to present and illuminate, within one volume, some of these major theoretical perspectives. The volume as a whole has several unique qualities. First, within each chapter, the authors provide a general overview of the theoretical per spective or approach within which they examine close relationship loss.
